Monica Mikkelsen, Intern
Monica is a therapist intern pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health
Counseling at the University of Northern Colorado.
During her undergraduate studies she double majored in International Affairs and Asian Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, then worked as a translator in the tech field in Los Angeles, California, before going back to school to pursue her dream of becoming a therapist.
She grew up in Denmark with an American mother and Danish father, spending a good portion of her life in the US. During her upbringing she developed a strong interest for studying cultures and languages, which has helped her gain a deeper understanding of various human experiences and challenges. She values providing a warm, safe, and compassionate environment for all people, as they work towards radical self-acceptance and understanding.
As a neurodivergent individual, she strongly believes in working with clients through a neurodiversity
affirming lens, embracing neurological differences as a natural and valuable human variance. She believes by learning to work with ourselves and embracing our innate human qualities, we will become stronger and many of our qualities will show up as strengths, rather than feel “broken” or “wrong.”
She is passionate in working with adults navigating ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, relational challenges, trauma, loneliness, self-esteem, and loss and grief. Through various modalities such as person-centered therapy, emotion focused therapy (EFT), strength-based therapy, mindfulness, art-based interventions, and CBT, she explores tools and perspectives with clients to support them in navigating their lives and connect with their intrinsic resilience.
Monica is currently accepting virtual and in-person sessions for individuals, couples, and families.
